About Us

Save Stone Mills emerged in response to concerns raised by local residents, including:

  • A lack of clear, accessible information about what the Crown corporation ALTO is proposing in the area through the High Speed Rail project.

  • Uncertainty about how — or whether — public feedback gathered through the consultation process will meaningfully influence decisions related to the proposed Southern Corridor.

  • Potential property impacts associated with the Southern Corridor, including the possible expropriation of homes, land, and private property, as well as damage to existing residences and agricultural lands.

  • Environmental and infrastructure impacts, including effects on ecologically sensitive areas; access challenges for residents and emergency services where roads may be cut off or permanently rerouted; and impacts on water systems — including wells and water tables — even for residents who do not live directly along the proposed route.

  • Questions about the urgency of the project and the costs associated with it.

Taken together, these concerns point to a broader issue: there is significant local opposition to the ALTO project as it relates to the proposed Southern Corridor, as well as the Northern Corridor and other areas included in the project’s current 1,000-km study region.

In several municipalities, councils have passed motions indicating they do not support the project as currently presented. While some have expressed support for high-speed rail infrastructure in principle, they do not support the routes shown in ALTO’s current materials. However, potential alternatives — such as routes further south, alignments closer to urban centres, or corridors that could better support station stops and make use of existing infrastructure — are not part of the current consultation process.

Opposition to the ALTO high-speed rail proposal is also emerging more broadly, with more Canadians questioning the urgency, cost, and impacts of this "nation-building" project.

Stone Mills Township is not simply a corridor between destinations. It is a community, and decisions made here will have lasting consequences for the people and animals that live on this land.
